Advent: The Coming of Christmas

Many of you may have started opening the doors of your favourite chocolate Advent calendar. Shops are filled with so many different types of calendars, there are advent calendars with chocolate, lego and even make-up! Yet, have you ever thought about why do we do this?

Advent is a Latin word that actually means 'coming'. In the Christian church, advent is a time of preparation and waiting for the birth of Jesus. This is the time when many of us prepare our homes, food and presents for the celebration of Christmas - the time of goodwill on earth and peace to all manking. Let us remember this and ensure that during this special advent season we bring peace to the hostile, love to the broken hearted and kindness and goodwill to all we meet. As we light the first candle, may its glow fill us with the love, peace and joy of the Christmas season and cause us to make every moment count for those around us, near and far.
